INSIGHT

Harrods first opened the doors of its legendary Knightsbridge store in 1849. Today, welcoming 15 million visitors a year, it remains a major tourism driver for London. A complete restoration and redesign of the iconic Harrods Food Halls was undertaken from 2017–2021. The new Food Halls would comprise of a Roastery and Bake Hall, Chocolate Hall, Fresh Market Hall and Dining Hall – home to more than 500 items of Harrods branded food and drink. To coincide with this transformation, Harrods approached Construct to redesign their own label drink and food gift packaging: a first in the brand’s 125-year history.

IDEA

The challenge was to create a design system capable of application across a huge range of products, diverse categories, and an array of materials and finishes – ensuring every individual item carried genuine gift-worthy status. The task tested the full range of Construct's packaging design team: From complex multi-category information systems to colour and quality matching across diverse production methodologies, sustainability planning, and the gigantic file sizes demanded by the intricacy of the illustrations. The vision Construct held onto throughout was one of impact: lust-worthy packaging illuminating the basement Food Hall with a rainbow cornucopia of exquisite product. A subtle shift away from traditional Harrods green and gold was achieved through layered metallics and the introduction of complementary green tones, delivering a modern desirability. New brand typefaces and an ingredients-inspired kaleidoscope of product-specific colour brought clarity to the complexity of the Timorous Beasties illustration commissioned by Harrods. The result is complexly beautiful and boldly simple.

IMPACT

Harrods' Food Hall is a cornerstone of the Knightsbridge store's luxury experience, and its own label products have become an essential purchase for visiting tourists and local shoppers alike. The new packaging has ignited desire across Harrods and become a flagship expression of the brand. For Construct, it remains one of the most complex and creatively rewarding packaging projects undertaken, a collaboration that raised the bar for what food packaging can be.
